Coming off my last post which definitely got some traffic and some strong opinions, I am going to bring it down with something lighter here. There are times when I wonder what IS the theme of my blog and whether or not a certain post is or is not appropriate for the blog. Then I realize, "Hey, it's my blog! I can write whatever I feel like." If I want to write about the mating habits of the Wyoming wide mouth bass, I shall be done (not sure WHY I would do that, but I could do that is my point). If my regular readers don't like it, they can just not read it. Wait I have regular readers? More likely my writing makes my readers irregular, but I actually have a good number of regular readers or else it is just my mother clicking on each post many times to build up my self esteem. Still not sure which it is.
Anyway, I like music. I can't sing, play, or write it, but I like music. So I guess I mean that I like to listen to music - that counts I think. While I am an alternative music fan, sometimes it is the quirky music that can be most fun (and even inspiring) to me. So I thought I'd share some of my off-the-beaten path musical favorites:
Dracula's Lament, Jason Segal
I won't say I am huge fan on Jason Segal's movies (except "The Muppets"), but he is a rather talented fellow. Besides acting, he sings, writes (including the Muppets), plays piano, and even won the California high school state championship. The first selection below is the full version of a song from Forgetting Sarah Marshall which I have only caught a few portions of on TV - which is good because I understand we get to know Jason a little too well in that movie. But in this version Jason is singing and puppeteering at the same time. And all in all, it is actually rather moving and inspiring little ditty for a blood sucking puppet.
This Too Shall Pass, OK GO with the Notre Dame Marching Band
I loved the original music video with the Rube Goldberg contraption, but this video with a special ops marching band wearing gillie suits all shot in a single take is just too good and always makes me smile, though now I am constantly eyeing the bushes for stealthily concealed clarinet players.
Let It Go, Idina Menzel with Jimmy Fallon
As far as I am concerned, Frozen is just an animated Broadway play and I admittedly love the music. This is a cool version that focuses on Idina Menzel's (or Adele Dazeem in John Travoltai-ese) singing with grade school instruments. I believe that the good Lord gave that woman an ample mouth so she could hit those notes without building up cranial pressure and blowing off her own head off. She has some pipes. I love the quirky little instruments too and the token white guy in the band who knows he is out of place.
500 Days of Summer Dance Sequence
Sometimes a good random dance sequence is just what the doctor ordered. This little dance scene is so far off of the tone of this movie that it is hilarious. I have had days were I could use some choreography to the set the mood for myself. And for those children wondering about the opening scene with the female in bed, the main character, Tom Hansen, is dancing because he rebuffed the girl's advances, just like Joseph in Egypt with Potifer's wife - a good moral lesson. Why else would he be dancing?
Finally, I have seen the Blue Man Group live once. They were a blast. I also like Moby to dance too (I think the Mormon-Two Step still counts as dancing). So you mix the two and throw in some PVC based instruments, you have a great tune.
Well there is some fun for your day. Maybe next time I'll post my thoughts gay marriage or picture of my kids on vacation. You just never know...
